Lasers and Surgery

Our Board Certified ophthalmologists are well-trained to perform a wide variety of lasers and surgeries. The most common are listed below. Please note that we do not perform LASIK, PRK, or SMILE.

Lasers

  • YAG capsulotomy: After cataract surgery, many patients develop scarring of the bag that holds the synthetic lens implant in place. This can make it feel like the cataract is coming back. Rest assured that cataracts do not grow back once they have been removed. Restoration of vision in these situations involves a simple 15-minute procedure that can be performed in the office.
  • Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT): This 15-minute office procedure can be used to help control eye pressure in patients who have open angle glaucoma. It is a nice option for patients who prefer to have a one-time procedure, rather than having to remember to use glaucoma drops every day, or for patients who are already taking glaucoma drops, but the eye pressure still remains elevated.
  • Laser Peripheral Iridectomy (LPI): This 5-minute office procedure is used to create a small opening in the iris, or the colored part of the eye, to help patients with narrow angle glaucoma. It provides an alternate pathway for the fluid in the eye to drain out to help control the eye pressure.
  • Retinopexy: Our retina specialists perform this procedure to treat retinal tears.
  • Diabetic retinal lasers: Our retina specialists will sometimes use laser to treat diabetes-related swelling or to treat proliferative diabetic eye disease.

Surgery

  • Cataract Surgery
  • Glaucoma Surgery: Traditional glaucoma surgeries include trabeculectomy and valve placements. These are major eye surgeries with significant recovery times and are typically reserved for advanced glaucoma. Recent technological advances have resulted in a new class of glaucoma surgeries termed Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS). Dr. Steven Kitay performs iStent and Xen surgeries. These surgeries are much less invasive and recovery time is much less; they are frequently performed in combination with cataract surgery.
  • Eyelid Surgery
  • Vitrectomy: Our retina specialists routinely perform this procedure for various conditions that affect the back of the eye including retinal detachments, macular pucker, and macular holes.
